The Internet of Things or IoT will not be gently knocking at higher education's door, it will be banging on our doors with an army of devices in tow, and sooner than many of us anticipate. Gartner defines IoT as "the network of physical objects that contain embedded technology to communicate and sense or interact with their internal states or the external environment." Think- smart coffee pots and thermostats. What do we do with an increasing number of IP-enabled students who show up in IP-enabled vehicles ( or via high speed networks), wearing IP-enabled garments, bearing multiple IP-enabled devices, with the expectation that our community has the resources required to meet their expectations? To help institutions address this emerging technology challenge and opportunity, WCET is spotlighting IoT in higher education during the Annual Meeting. The opening and closing keynotes at WCET will discuss many of the IoT implications, considerations, and fun ways connected devices can impact our students and institutions. On Wednesday afternoon, join the ever charismatic resident app-ologist, Robbie Melton, associate vice chancellor of mobilization emerging technology with the Tennessee Board of Regents, whose mission is to demonstrate as many educational applications of mobile apps and devices as she can fit into a presentation. Melton will also discuss the role and impact of IoT, virtual realities, and mobile devices in education and what administrators need to know. Prepare to see some innovative and cool apps and devices and explore alternate reality from your seat.
